Ami Olian's Fund for Parkinson's Disease
It is with great sadness that I am writing this update. Ami Olian was tragically and suddenly killed while riding his bike on Sunday, April 1st, 2007.
As you all know, cycling was his passion and his enthusiasm for all sports is what led us on this journey to the Half Ironman in the first place. He died doing something that he loved.
With your help, we would like to continue fighting for a cure for Parkinson's Disease through the Brain Foundation; as we know he would have wanted the same for others battling with it. Ami always thought about others first and he was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Thank you for your generosity.

For those who don't know that much about me allow me to introduce myself:
My name is Noa Olian.
I am a 22-year-old female from Sydney, Australia. With the Brain Foundation's help, I have set up this website to help me accomplish a very personal challenge that I have set for myself - to complete the half ironman in Busselton, Western Australia on the 6th May, 2006.

I want to use my participation in this race to raise money for Parkinson's disease, a condition which is very close to my heart as my father was diagnosed in June of last year.
What is a Half Ironman?
The Half Ironman is a triathlon consisting of a 1.9 km open water swim, followed by a 90 km bike ride followed by a 21.2 km run.
What is Parkinson's disease?
To give you a little bit of background, Parkinson’s, a disease for which there is no known cause or cure, is a movement disorder caused by the degeneration of Dopamine-producing cells in the brain - typically presenting with symptoms such as slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, instability and tremor. Parkinson's disease currently affects about 40,000 Australians. Approximately one to two people per 1,000 are estimated to have the disorder, with the incidence increasing to one in 100 of people over the age of 60. It is slightly more common in men than in women. It appears that over the last 15 years the incidence of Parkinson’s among young and fit and healthy individuals is increasing. So far, scientists have not determined the reason why some people develop Parkinson's disease and others do not. Suggested causes include environmental factors such as pesticides, toxins and chemicals; genetic factors (although the disease appears to be inherited in only a small percentage of cases) and head trauma. Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive illness, and no drug can prevent the progression of the disease.

In June of last year, my family's world changed quite dramatically as my father was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, a condition which unfortunately in Australia, has very low awareness and receives little financial support from the government. Therefore, the support for those diagnosed and their families and carers comes from the generosity of individuals and corporations. I ask you, my friends and family in the wider community, to help me achieve this daunting goal by sponsoring my completion of this event through donations to the Brain Foundation, through their secure e-commerce facility linked to this page or for those who prefer, cheques and/or credit card details and amounts can be mailed to:
Brain Foundation, PO Box 579, CROWS NEST NSW 1585
All funds will go directly towards research for Parkinson's Disease. For corporate donations over $500 please contact me on noazy@yahoo.com to discuss. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a tax invoice.
Every donation made will help me not only reach my financial goal but the emotional reward of raising money towards easing the burden of those living with Parkinsons and helping get closer towards finding a cure will provide immense moral support and inspiration through the training and the race itself. Please feel free to forward the details of this site on to anyone who may be interested in supporting my challenge.
In health and in happiness, Yours sincerely Noa
